"Justice is about harmony. Revenge is about you making yourself feel better." Batman Begins. One of the few films/books which have actually changed/shaped the way I thought. This quotation gives voice to the discomfort I've always had with revenge stories.
"Her manner was incurably gentle, and she was not aware how much it concealed the sternness of her purpose." On Fanny Price, from Jane Austen's Mansfield Park. Only fictional character I've ever had a crush on. Still do.
ANGEL (bitterly) "Am I a thing worth saving? Am I a righteous man? The world wants me gone." Joss Whedon, Amends. Whedon is one of the most God-haunted agnostics I've ever read/watched. In addition to his brilliant writing, his work often (not always, unfortunately, but often) deals with intense moral issues like redemption, atonement, and the masterful way he handles them often profoundly moves me.
"We read to know we're not alone. Some might say, we love to know we're not alone." William Nicholson, Shadowlands. Well, it's the title of my livejournal, so I should say where it comes from.
